An email scam, falsely claiming to be from the IRS, states that recipients are qualified to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus refund. It then asks recipients to click on a link to fill out a form, apparently for direct deposit into the scammer’s bank account. According to the IRS, this email is an identity theft scheme to obtain recipients’ personal and financial information so the scammers can clean out the victims’ financial accounts.
DO NOT respond to this type of message. The IRS doesn’t require taxpayers to fill out a separate form to get the Economic Stimulus payment or to have it directly deposited. Remember, the IRS will never call or email you to ask for your Social Security number or bank account information.
If you believe you have been victimized in this scam, contact local authorities and your financial institution immediately to report the incident. If you suspect fraud or ID theft on your NWFCU account, email us at fraud@nwfcu.org.
