The Social Security Administration has reported a new phishing email claiming your annual Social Security statement may contain errors, adding instructions to follow a link to review your statement. The link redirects to a seemingly legitimate website that asks for your Social Security number. If you proceed, you will be given an option to generate a statement. When you attempt to generate a statement, malicious code may be installed on your PC. This code attempts to collect online banking activity to gain access to your bank accounts.
To help mitigate your security risks: install antivirus software and keep it up to date; do not follow unsolicited links and do not open unsolicited email; use caution when visiting untrusted websites and when entering personal information online. Contact the Social Security Administration at www.ssa.gov to verify authenticity of any messages.
