Fannie Mae (the Federal National Mortgage Association) is a federally chartered, share-holder-owned, and privately managed corporation headquartered in Washington, D.C. Fannie Mae's unique mission is to provide financial products and services that increase the availability and affordability of housing for low-, moderate-, and middle-income Americans. They fulfill their mission by creating an efficient and reliable secondary market in which residential mortgage loans are bought and sold. By selling their loans to Fannie Mae, or pooling them to issue mortgage-backed securities, lenders replenish their supply of capital so they can make more mortgage loans to American home buyers.
