Controller - NWCM

Overview

As a member of the Northwest Capital Management (NWCM) senior leadership team, the Controller will be the architect of our financial infrastructure during a period of significant growth. This role balances high-level financial strategy and advisory with the technical execution of daily accounting operations. The position requires routine interaction with the Executive Team, Board of Directors, and the credit union’s independent accountants and regulators. The Controller will oversee all financial reporting and accounting functions across multiple business lines, including Wealth Management, Insurance, and Real Estate Settlement.

Responsibilities

  • Train and supervise direct reports and ensure all team members are well trained and proficient in all assigned duties
  • Assign, direct, coordinate and review work performed by staff
  • Collaborate with senior leadership across business lines to support operational and financial objectives
  • Direct all general ledger activities, including month-end close, intercompany transactions, and eliminating entries
  • Oversee the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements with all subsidiary companies
  • Direct day-to-day accounting activities, including:
    • General ledger management
    • Accounts payable
    • Payroll coordination with parent company HR department
    • Fixed asset accounting
    • Commission calculation for advisors and insurance agents
    • Maintain commission calculation software
    • Oversee cash management and banking relationships
  • Ensure proper maintenance of books and records in compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Lead or support accounting system migrations, integrations, and process improvements
  • Evaluate and improve accounting workflows, controls, and reporting efficiency
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting, provide detailed monthly variance analysis and financial insights to guide executive decision-making
  • Oversee the quarterly FOCUS filings for the broker dealer
  • Pay and file biannual SIPC report for broker dealer
  • File annual Property reports with County of Fairfax and Business and Professional Licenses with Town of Herndon
  • Manage annual broker-dealer and corporate audits
  • Prepare broker dealer yearend financial report including footnotes
  • Review and approve corporate yearend financial report including footnotes
  • Complete annual NCUA CUSO Registrations for all subsidiaries
  • Perform research and analysis and prepare special reports for the Chief Executive Officer and other business line stakeholders
  • Prepares reports for and reviews the compilation of the bimonthly Board packages
  • Maintain a reporting relationship with the Vice President/Controller of Northwest Federal Credit Union
  • Remains cognizant of and adheres to NWFCU policies and procedures as well as regulations pertaining to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in a financial institution (RIA or Broker Dealer)
  • Minimum  5 years in a supervisory/leadership role
  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • In depth knowledge of GAAP
  • No task too small attitude—equally comfortable presenting to the board, building spreadsheets or reconciling accounts.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Preferred 

  • CPA 
  • Advanced proficiency in Sage 50 and/or Prologue
